Through tunnels for cars to pass through and wildlife to pass over
Entering the 1.7 mile Eisenhower Tunnel as it crosses the Continental Divide at 11,158'
above sea level. It's a dual-bore tunnel that's officially named the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel, with the westbound tunnel named after President Eisenhower and the eastbound tunnel named after the Colorado Governor who lobbied for an interstate highway across Colorado. We were only 78 miles from our destination in Longmont, CO. Still, we had a lot of photo stops to make and photos to take.
Approximately 1325 miles and 120 hours later we pulled into Jayne and Bill's driveway.....hot, happy and hungry. When I mapped out the route at home, Google gave the mileage as 1326 and length of time to drive it as 19 hours and some minutes. Fifty-nine yrs. ago at the ripe old age of 19, I made the drive from Colorado Springs to Boise straight through and got my behind chewed by my sister-in-law Dorothy because I had her 5 year old son Leroy with me. That was before freeways so it was probably 1200 miles. Took me 2 days to drive back....and "face the music".
We had a lot of catching up to do in the next 4 days. Most of my catching up
would be from the sofa with my feet up.
To be continued.......
